THE POLICY EMPHASIS IN THIS EDITION HAS SHIFTED TO REFLECT TODAY’S MOST RECENT CHANGES. Rather than emphasizing the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, updated content now highlights the uncertainty of repeal and replace.
-
NEW CHAPTER FOCUSES ON POPULATION HEALTH AND CHALLENGES OF THE NEW APPROACH TO HEALTH CARE DELIVERY. New coverage discusses the disparities between population groups and differences across countries while offering insights into understanding overall health outcomes. Students learn how commonly used health metrics can improve understanding of the medical care delivery system’s role in improving the overall quality of a health care system and value of the medical care received.
-
MEDICARE AND MEDICAID EACH APPEAR IN THEIR OWN CHAPTERS. The author has now separated discussion of Medicare and Medicaid into two distinct chapters with expanded details.
-
TECHNICAL DISCUSSIONS CLARIFY KEY ECONOMIC AND HEALTH CARE TOPICS. Throughout the book, students examine cost shifting, the impact of insurance on mortality, and Baumol’s cost disease, as well as a formalized presentation of Grossman’s model.
-
NEW "APPLIED MICRO METHODS" HELP STUDENTS DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN CORRELATION AND CAUSATION. Students learn that policy and social research has limited alternatives because of constraints in using randomized selection in establishing study cohorts. Content highlights four approaches economists use to remove selection bias: difference in differences, synthetic control, instrumental variables, and propensity score matching. Analytical reviews of 20 studies demonstrate techniques and emphasize the impact of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) on income, young adults’ health, time use, and premiums.
-
CLEARLY DEFINED CORE FOCUS HIGHLIGHT KEY CONCEPTS. Ten key concepts introduced in the first chapter set a unifying theme for this edition. Icons in the margins throughout the book remind students how each subject relates to one of the key concepts.
-
SPECIFIC CONTENT ISSUES ENHANCE STUDENTS’ PERSPECTIVES. Each chapter begins with a brief policy issue related to the chapter's focus. In addition, special features called "Issues in Medical Care Delivery" in every chapter summarize critical studies in medical research, epidemiology, public health, and other fields to help students see the far-reaching impact of health care economics.
-
COVERAGE HIGHLIGHTS KEY CONTRIBUTORS IN HEALTH CARE. These fascinating profiles of real individuals show students how doctors, economists, and other stakeholders can have a profound impact on health care economics and policy.
-
STUDENTS LEARN TO USE INSIGHTFUL ANALYTICAL MODELS. "Back of the Envelope" features encourage students to use models in analyzing and understanding economics. Features address such topics as the valuation of a life, the calculation of a rate of return, the notion of elasticity, the welfare implications of subsidies, the impact of employer mandates, cost-benefit calculations, and the cost effectiveness of disease prevention.
-
STRAIGHT-FORWARD DISCUSSION OF "APPLIED MICRO METHODS" DEMONSTRATES HOW THESE ARE USED TO REDUCE ESTIMATION BIAS PRESENT IN OBSERVATIONAL STUDIES. Students examine this bias that serves as the basis of most policy discussions. The book provides an explanation of the problem of bias and details the four techniques used to correct the bias. Analytical reviews of approximately 20 policy-oriented papers demonstrate the use of these techniques.
-
STIMULATING GLOBAL COMPARISONS PINPOINT DIFFERENCE IN THE UNITED STATES VERSUS OTHER COUNTRIES. This feature compares and contrasts the United States and its lifestyle, cultural, and economic characteristics to those of six other developed countries to help students challenge their assumptions about health care.
-
ADDITIONAL MARGINAL NOTATIONS CLARIFY CONCEPTS. Students find definitions of key words and phrases, recommended websites where students can find additional information, and policy issues related to the reading in the margins.
