-
Chapters on individual theories now feature new sections focused on how each theory can be applied to school counseling. Each section was contributed by an individual with expertise in both the theory being discussed and the field of school counseling, providing valuable perspective on this important area of practice.
-
Chapters in Part II now feature sections written by experts in each theory that address a consistent set of specific questions, making it easier for readers to compare and contrast the various theories. Gaining perspective from experts steeped in a given theory also provides deeper insights to enhance understanding.
-
Content on all theories has been revisited for the new edition and updated as needed based on relevant developments in the field. Chapters with significant updates or expansions include those on Adlerian therapy, behavior therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, feminist therapy and postmodern approaches.
-
A concluding chapter explores the idea that an integrative approach to counseling practice can help meet the needs of diverse client populations in different settings. Chapter content and illustrations revisit key themes and ideas from all 11 approaches and help readers compare and contrast them. In addition, the chapter includes discussion of the psychotherapy integration movement, integration of spirituality in counseling and research on the central role of the therapeutic alliance and the effectiveness of psychotherapy.
-
A unique feature of this text is the inclusion of realistic client cases (along with accompanying videos) in each of the theory chapters. Dr. Kellie Kirksey demonstrates how she works with two clients, Gwen and Stan, from each of the theoretical perspectives, demonstrating their application and making it easier for readers to compare and contrast approaches. By applying a few techniques from each theory, the cases help bring the theories to life and explore practical applications to specific problems raised by the clients.
-
Corey's discussion of current ethical and professional issues facing counseling and human service professionals helps prepare readers for the realities of modern practice.
-
A framework for creatively synthesizing the therapeutic approaches, along with step-by-step guidelines, enhances the text's focus on helping readers draw from various theoretical models to develop a personalized counseling style.
-
In addition to helpful content on integrating theories and approaches, Chapter 15 includes numerous summary charts comparing the various theories on a number of dimensions. These at-a-glance charts make it easier to pinpoint key differences in areas such as multicultural focus, basic philosophies and limitations.
