Medical-Surgical Nursing uses a concept map approach for common acute care patient presentations, using a body-systems model. The concept maps promote deep learning in person-centred care. The text also provides you with a nursing decision-making framework for clinical planning, right from the beginning of a shift, so that you become less dependent on the nurse in applying clinical decision-making to person-centred nursing care. This text is concise, practical and streamlined and interfaces with your other core nursing curriculum texts, such as Fundamentals, Clinical Skills and Health Assessment.

  • Learning objectives are designed to follow five key concepts in the stages of assessment and care to ensure consistency across all body systems

  • Each Concept Map section in the chapter presents a visual pathway, cues and questions to guide students through Assessment, Planning, Intervention, Evaluation, and Discharge

  • Boxed elements relating to the Concepts Maps include 'Subjective health assessment' boxes that provide context for students about client presentation; 'Physical assessment' boxes that indicate what students are looking for with the client; 'Planning care' boxes that provide students with information about how to plan appropriate care; 'Presentation' boxes that always precede the first Concept Map segment and describe the incoming client

  • 'Evidence based practice' boxes emphasise the importance of evidence and clinical research in nursing by linking theory to practice

  • 'Safety in nursing' boxes help students to identify client health and safety issues and the appropriate response to a critical situation

  • 'Reflective practice' boxes introduce realistic clinical situations and ethical controversies, with questions that ask students to consider how they would react

  • End-of-chapter elements include reference to relevant clinical skills, problem solving scenarios and portfolio development, so that students can practise planning and prioritising using the key chapter concepts and methods as well as developing a portfolio of resources for each area of their nursing practice
